How to Safely Clean Liquid Silver Jewellery

The complete care guide from Corazon Latino
Liquid silver is one of the most beautiful forms of sterling silver — shimmering, silky, and incredibly comfortable to wear. But because it’s made from hundreds of tiny beads strung on delicate silk threads, it needs slightly different care than a solid silver bangle or pendant.
The good news? Liquid silver is very easy to clean once you know how. This guide explains why liquid silver tarnishes, how to prevent it, and the safest ways to restore its shine.
Why Liquid Silver Tarnishes
All sterling silver tarnishes over time. Tarnish is a natural chemical reaction caused by silver interacting with chemicals in the air or on the skin.
- Even tarnish: caused by airborne pollutants such as traffic fumes, cleaning chemicals, or dry-cleaning agents.
- Patchy tarnish: caused by perfume, hand sanitiser, lotions, or other products applied while wearing.
Once the chemical reaction begins, it continues until it is actively removed.
How to Prevent Tarnish
- Gently buff your liquid silver with a silver polishing cloth before putting it away.
- Store it in its box to protect it from moisture and airborne pollutants.
What to Do If Your Liquid Silver Tarnishes
Because liquid silver is delicate and strung on silk:
- Avoid silver polish (it gets caught between the beads).
- Avoid aggressive rubbing with cloths which will move the beads and expose the threads.
Method 1 — Silver Dip (Quick and Easy)
If you use silver dip:
- Dip the jewellery briefly. Dip is an unpleasant chemical which will cause more tarnishing if left too long or not fully rinsed off.
- Rinse thoroughly in several changes of clean water.
- Allow it to dry completely in the open air.
Method 2 — Natural Tarnish Removal (Our Favourite)
This gentle method is safe for silk threads and works beautifully on any silver.
- Line a shallow dish with tin foil (shiny side up).
- Add 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda, 1 tsp salt, and 250ml warm water. Stir to dissolve.
- Place your liquid silver in the solution, ensuring it touches the foil.
- Watch as the tarnish transfers to the foil.
- Rinse in clean water and allow to dry fully before storing.
- If your liquid silver has a lot of strands, turn it over and move it around so every strand comes into contact with the foil.
- If it is heavily tarnished, replace the foil and repeat.
- Rinse in fresh water to remove any salt from the threads (or they'll become stiff) and allow to dry completely.
Your liquid silver will be bright and beautiful again.
