Making bangles work for you
We love bangles. They are just so versatile, and with our busy lives, their almost indestructible nature is a big advantage.
Here are our top tips for finding the right silver bangle for you:
- Scale – Do you want something slim line and delicate, a subtle silver highlight for your wrist or do you want a big bold statement piece?
- Types – There are 2 types of bangle. Those that are made in a full circle which you have to slip your hand through and those which are a cuff with an opening on the underside for you to slide over your wrist.
The solid circle type are the strongest for their weight, however, because it is an unbroken circle, there is no flexibility on the size whatsoever. You need to find one that has an internal diameter that is large enough to get your hand through and small enough it doesn’t fall off your hand. Do bear in mind, because it has to be large enough to get your hand through it will always be much larger than your wrists and will “jangle” about. If you are sitting at a keyboard or working with your hands that may get pretty annoying, so do think about when you’re going to wear this kind of bangle.
The alternative is the cuff style. The great thing about these is that you can adjust them to fit your wrist so you get a perfect fit. To do this, put it on when you first get it and squeeze it gently so that it is tight enough on your wrist to look good but there is still an opening large enough to squeeze your wrist through. (If you turn it so that the opening is on the side of your wrist, that’s the narrowest point so you can squeeze through a smaller gap and have a tighter fit. Do NOT open and close your bangle every time you wear it. Flexing the metal will eventually snap it. This more flexible design means that this kind of silver bangle are suitable for a larger range of wrist sizes and particularly good for women with bigger hands who struggle with the full circle style.
- Fit – To find out the minimum inner circumference of the full circle style, hold out you hand with your fingers straight out and touch the tip of your little finger with your thumb. This will make your hand as small as possible. Then get someone else (it really needs 3 hands!) to measure around the widest point to give you the circumference you need to get your hand though the bangle. (if the bangle you’ve fallen in love with is a few millimetres too small you can grease your hand with a little hand cream and you should slide in OK).
