There are thousands of silver earrings on the market, with prices starting as low as less than a tenner for a delicate pair of silver studs and reaching into the hundreds for some of the bigger designer pieces from the big names like Tiffany and Links of London.

While there is no doubt whatsoever about the quality of the earrings from these big names, when you start buying at the bottom end of the price range, things are not so clear. To sell jewellery as silver in the UK, you MUST get it tested and hallmarked to prove that it really is silver and does not contain any of the base metals which case cuse allergic reactions in sensitive skin (nickel & lead being the biggest offenders). BUT despite this rule, how many times have you seen racks of little earrings on their black plastic display cards marked 925 silver. The problem is, you do not legally have to test and hallmark silver if it weighs less than 7.8g, and most earrings fall under this weight. This means that there is no need to test the silver before cliaming it is silver. Unfortunately 925 is NOT sufficient t guarantee that silver is free from this allergenic metals.
