Although Corazon Latino is all about silver jewellery, I love all things sparkly, and am always on the lookout for other pretty and unusual handmade jewellery.

I recently came across Oxford based Manou Bijoux and thought they were worth talking about.

They have a lovely range of handmade jewellery made with semi precious stones, sparkling Venetian glass and Swarovski crystals on silver and gold wirework. Not only are there some lovely pieces, but they are ridiculously cheap. You can get a fabulous handmade necklace like these lovely Amethyst and Deep red heart necklaces for the same price as a mass produced piece of high street costune jewellery.

With new designs being added all the time to reflect the latest fashions (right now you can brighten your days with bracelets in the delicate shades of spring), and a lovely new range of hair accessories there is bound to be something to tickle your fancy.

Coming from the Greek word "Opallos", meaning to "see a change of colour" Opals are one of the most striking and unusual of precious stones.

Unlike most precious stones, Opals are not crystals, but solidified silica gels. The shimmering colours; which vary from pearlescent white to almost black; within the opals are created by light refracting through the transparant spheres within the stone. Opals are extremely rare, with over 90% of the worlds supply coming from the Australian Outback, and the balance from South and Central America.

Some of the prettiest Opal jewellery around can be found at Sugarpuss London They have a gorgeous range of necklaces, with prices from £85 (combining a single opal with a sterling silver chain) right up to £12,500 for a necklace of opal beads with a 18k gold and diamond clasp.

If bracelets are more your thing, then take a look at their opal bracelets. They come in a huge variety of colours including the one of a kind Mexican fire opal bracelet, a snap at £70.

If you want to stick with the worlds most famous opals, then look no further than their Australian opal jewellery, combining Australian opals with Swarovski crsytals and freshwater pearls. My personal favourite is the Black opal and Pearl necklace made with a solid Lightening Ridge opal.

Many pieces of Opal jewellery are made from composites (thin slivers of opal backed with plastics and resins), but not at Sugarpuss London. All their jewellery is made from solid opals and comes with a certificate of authenticity to guarantee you are buying the REAL THING.

If you like to create your own look, and you're a fan of bangles, then you HAVE to visit the fabulous Alex & Ani

They have a lovely range of silver jewellery, but it is their fabulous, patented exanding silver and gold wire bangles that are really special.

These clever bangles are made from a long piece of wire with a loop at one end which is threaded over the wire to form a circle which can be adjusted for  perfect fit. Each bangle is then decorated with beads, crystals and semi precious stones to create a striking overall look.

Designed to be worn in a stack, they are available online in a selection of stacks from 7 to 34 bangles  and prices from $70 to over $600.

Even more fantastic, they have a very cool bangle bar where you can create you own custom stack from a wide selection of their best selling bangles. Just browse the selection and drag and drop your chosen bangles onto the bar to see the finished article. Choose from coloured or metal beads, dainty charms or simple wire to create your own unique look.

Sadly they do not ship outside the US at the moment,  so we'll have to wait a while to get our hands on some of their fabulous silver jewellery.

With Valentine's Day over and done, you would be forgiven for being a little tired of the sickly sweet this week. What better antidote to all those hearts and flowers than the contemporary silver jewellery from New York based jeweller Laura Lobdell.

Lobdell bases her unusual jewellery on every day items from Champagne corks to Macaroni, Matches to Popcorn.

Her twist on Valentine's day included the "Your my Pick" guitar plectrum necklace and the seriously avant guard "No butts about it, be mine" Cigarette Butt necklace.

If you live in NYC, and want to buy her fun jewellery, get down to her West Village store. for the rest of us, we'll ahve to wait a while, but I am sure that it will not be long before Laura's fabulous take on Silver jewellery becomes more readily available.
